Anna Kaplan - Spring 2025 - Industrial Arts Studio
Anna Kaplan, Executive Director of Graycliff, shares how one of Frank Lloyd Wright’s most intimate and expressive designs continues to evolve—without losing its soul. Graycliff is not just a home perched above Lake Erie; it’s a powerful embodiment of Wright’s vision for organic architecture, where every line and material harmonizes with the surrounding landscape.
Now stewarded by its third owner, the Graycliff Conservancy, the site has been accessible to the public for nearly 30 years and has undergone an extensive period of thoughtful restoration. But the work is far from over. Anna’s talk explores the challenge—and opportunity—of creating new architecture in a setting defined by legacy. A new visitor center is on the horizon, expanding from an existing structure with a design that honors and extends Wright’s principles: contextual, respectful, and quietly revolutionary.
This is not preservation for nostalgia’s sake—it’s active, living stewardship of a site where architecture and nature continue their ongoing conversation.
