Aubrey Hlavaty - Spring 2026 - Big Ditch

• 4/2/26

Aubrey Hlavaty, President and Lead Designer of Copper & Cotton, shares the story behind her journey from accounting professional to designer of thoughtfully curated, breathtaking interiors. What began as a natural passion for home projects evolved into a full-service design studio rooted in balance, pairing the strength and patina of copper with the softness and warmth of cotton to create spaces that feel both refined and deeply personal.

Working alongside her husband’s business, John the Plumber, Aubrey discovered her love for guiding clients through design decisions, helping them select materials, fixtures, and finishes that honored both their homes and their lifestyles. In 2019, she took a leap of faith to pursue design full-time, founding Copper & Cotton and building a studio defined by craftsmanship, attention to detail, and a commitment to timeless design.

In this talk, Aubrey walks through the evolution of her practice, from early client collaborations to the creation of her flagship showroom on Main Street in Buffalo. Designed as an immersive experience, the showroom showcases her signature aesthetic: layered, textural, and grounded in natural materials. From marble countertops and handcrafted cabinetry to curated lighting and textiles, every element reflects a dedication to quality and intentional design.

Aubrey also offers insight into her full-service design process, guiding clients from initial concept through construction. Using photorealistic renderings, detailed material selections, and comprehensive construction documents, her team ensures that each project is both visually compelling and highly functional. Her portfolio spans a range of architectural styles, from historic restorations like Georgian Revival and Victorian homes to modern interpretations of cottage, European country, and rustic design.

Through projects that prioritize both beauty and livability, Aubrey demonstrates how well-designed spaces can evoke emotion, support everyday life, and stand the test of time. Whether restoring historic details, sourcing natural materials, or designing her own family retreat, her work is driven by a simple but powerful idea: the best spaces don’t just look beautiful, they make you feel something.

In this talk, Aubrey invites us to see design not just as decoration, but as an intentional act, one that shapes how we live, gather, and experience the world around us.
